  • 3/4 cup white sugar or to taste
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups milk whole, 2%, or plant-based
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half cream to cool and enrich the cocoa

Method
 

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
  2. Add boiling water and whisk until smooth.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the milk and heat until very hot without boiling.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Divide the hot cocoa into mugs and top each with half-and-half to cool slightly.
  7. Serve hot and add optional toppings like marshmallows or whipped cream.

Notes

You can use oat milk or almond milk for a dairy-free version. For a fun twist, add a pinch of cinnamon or top with chocolate shavings. Adults may enjoy adding a splash of Irish cream.
