Ingredients

Hot Toddy Base
  • 3/4 cup hot water heated to just under boiling
  • 1 1/2 ounces whiskey bourbon, rye, or Irish whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice freshly squeezed preferred
  • 2 teaspoons honey raw honey works best
Garnish
  • 1 slice lemon wheel for garnish
  • 1 stick cinnamon stick optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Mug or heat-proof glass
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Kettle or pot for heating water

Method

  1. Heat water in a kettle or pot until it reaches a rolling boil, then let it cool for 2 minutes to prevent burning the alcohol.
  2. Warm your serving mug by filling it with hot water, then empty it just before making the drink.
  3. In the warmed mug, combine whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and honey.
  4. Pour in the hot water, leaving about 1/2 inch at the top for garnishes.
  5. Stir thoroughly until the honey completely dissolves, about 30 seconds.
  6. Taste and adjust - add more honey for sweetness, more lemon for brightness, or more whiskey for strength.
  7. Garnish with a lemon wheel and cinnamon stick. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Whiskey Selection: Bourbon provides warmth and vanilla notes, rye adds spice, and Irish whiskey offers smoothness. Choose based on your preference.
Non-Alcoholic Version: Omit whiskey and replace hot water with ginger or chamomile tea for a soothing cold remedy.
Make-Ahead Tip: Pre-mix whiskey, lemon juice, and honey. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days, then add hot water when ready to serve.
Temperature Tip: Use water that's just under boiling to prevent evaporating the alcohol too quickly.
