Method
- Heat water in a kettle or pot until it reaches a rolling boil, then let it cool for 2 minutes to prevent burning the alcohol.
- Warm your serving mug by filling it with hot water, then empty it just before making the drink.
- In the warmed mug, combine whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and honey.
- Pour in the hot water, leaving about 1/2 inch at the top for garnishes.
- Stir thoroughly until the honey completely dissolves, about 30 seconds.
- Taste and adjust - add more honey for sweetness, more lemon for brightness, or more whiskey for strength.
- Garnish with a lemon wheel and cinnamon stick. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
Whiskey Selection: Bourbon provides warmth and vanilla notes, rye adds spice, and Irish whiskey offers smoothness. Choose based on your preference.
Non-Alcoholic Version: Omit whiskey and replace hot water with ginger or chamomile tea for a soothing cold remedy.
Make-Ahead Tip: Pre-mix whiskey, lemon juice, and honey. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days, then add hot water when ready to serve.
Temperature Tip: Use water that's just under boiling to prevent evaporating the alcohol too quickly.
