Ingredients

Salt Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour substitute
  • 1 cup salt table salt or Morton salt
  • 1 cup water room temperature

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring Cups
  • Dough whisk or wooden spoon
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baking sheet (for oven drying)

Method

  1. Mix the dry ingredients: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Let your kids help with measuring to teach them basic math skills while they think they're just playing.
  2. Add water gradually: Pour water slowly while mixing. This prevents lumps and gives you better control over the dough's texture.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead for 7-10 minutes until smooth. The dough should feel like Play-Doh when ready. If it's too dry, add water one teaspoon at a time. If too sticky, sprinkle in more flour.
  4. Create and shape: Use rolling pins and cookie cutters to create shapes, or let kids sculpt freely with their hands.
  5. Dry the creations: For air drying, place pieces on a screen for 48 hours, turning every 12 hours. For oven drying, bake at 250°F for 30 minutes per ¼ inch thickness, turning frequently.

Notes

Safety Note: Salt dough should not be eaten due to high salt content. Always supervise young children during play.
Storage: Store unused dough in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Tips: Cover work area with vinyl tablecloth for easy cleanup. To join pieces, brush surfaces with water before pressing together.
